Katie McLaughlin Named Pac-12 Swimmer Of The Week
Senior Won Five Different Events In Dual Meet Victories At ASU, Arizona
Katie McLaughlin, who won five individual races in five different events during Cal's sweep of Arizona State and Arizona last weekend, has been named the Pac-12 Women's Swimmer of the Week.
Â
McLaughlin, a senior from Dana Point, began her week last Friday at Arizona State, where she captured the 200-yard butterfly in 1:55.89 with a nearly four-second margin over the field. She later earned a victory in the 500 free in 4:48.02 and swam a leg on the Bears' winning 200 free relay, as Cal claimed the meet, 190-110.
Â
A day later at Arizona, McLaughlin won the 200 free in 1:46.81 (by 3.5 seconds over the runner-up finisher), the 100 free in 49.29 and the 100 fly in 52.69. She also swam anchor on a runner-up 400 free relay, although her split of 48.86 was the fastest of any swimmer during the afternoon. The Bears won the meet, 179-118.
Â
McLaughlin currently ranks among the top 16 in the country in four events – 100 free (16th), 200 free (15th), 100 fly (11th) and 200 fly (9th). At last year's NCAA Championships, she reached the A final in the 100 and 200 fly and the 100 free, while she swam legs on three top-three relays.
Â
McLaughlin is the second Golden Bear honored by the Pac-12 this season, as junior
Abbey Weitzeil was tabbed the Pac-12 Swimmer of the Month for November.
