Bears Remain In South Bay For Stanford Intercollegiate
Cal Among 17 Teams Competing In Three-Day Tournament
STANFORD – Fresh off its thrilling victory over No. 1 Stanford in the Big Match, the Cal women's golf team remains in the South Bay this weekend to compete in the Stanford Invitational.
The Bears defeated the Cardinal on Wednesday 3-2-1 after Cal's No. 6 team of
Sofia Lundell and Cooper Hunt won the final hole of the day. The Big Match, which was introduced last year and features Cal and Stanford's men's and women's programs combining forces for a four-ball match play event, was played up the road from Stanford at Menlo Country Club.
Wednesday's victory should provide a pick-me-up for the Bears, who finished eighth and 10
th respectively in each of their first two tournaments of the 2019-20 season. Cal was also boosted Wednesday by the season-debut of
Elena Arias, who had a strong freshman season last year but missed each of the first two tournaments this season with a foot injury. Arias teamed with Connor Golembeski of the men's team to register one of the Bears' three victories Wednesday.
Cal will be one of 17 teams to compete in this weekend's three-day event. The Bears are part of the first group to tee off Friday morning at 7:30 a.m. along with USC and UC Davis.
The field features five of the top-10 teams in the country, according to Golfweek. Two others are ranked in the top-25. Eight Pac-12 teams will be represented.
