Bears Go 3-0 To Advance To Cup Quarterfinals
California’s 3-0 Day At Ray Sheeran Field On Treasure Island Propelled The Bears To Win Their Pool
TREASURE ISLAND, Calif. – The Golden Bears continued to build momentum throughout the day, using three different lineups and nine underclassmen to win their pool behind three dominant performances.
Match vs San Jose State:
In Cal's first match of the day at the West Coast 7s on Treasure Island,
Nick Bloom and
Nathan Zylstra opened the first half with a pair of tries. The Bears continued to apply pressure in the second, scoring four more tries thanks to the efforts from
Max Clark (two),
Jack Gallagher, and another from Zylstra.
Alex Brundage also contributed a pair of conversions and Gallagher went 1-for-2 in his attempts.
Match vs Trinity Western (British Columbia)
California scored in nearly every minute of the opening half and
Seth Purdey already had himself a hat trick before the six-minute mark.
Marcus Shankland was another player of note, collecting three scores of his own, including one in the first and two in the second.
Keanu Andrade entered the match in the second half and immediately made an impact, scoring in eighth minute of play.
Max Schumacher scored his first try of the day in the 10th-minute and added pair of conversions to his tally.
Match vs San Diego
The Bears controlled possession once again in their third and final match of the day and the first half was highlighted by tries from three different players: Schumacher, Brundage and
Thomas Spradling. In the second, Cal scored four more times with Schumacher and Brundage adding their second tries of the match and
Jake Broekhuizen and
Nate Salter registering their firsts of the tournament.
Overall, the Bears featured three different lineups in today's matchups with nine freshmen and sophomores among Cal's gameday squad. Furthermore, Cal was able to utilize their bench effectively, putting a total of 11 players into the match who did not start. The team's ability to maintain most of the possession played a big factor in their ability to shut out all three opponents on Saturday.
QUOTABLE:
"Solid first day," said head coach Jack Clark. "We wanted to advance whilst managing the roster and spreading the competition minutes."
"Everyone who was out there today knows that once they put on a Cal jersey, they have a responsibility to give everything that they have," said Bloom. "That's exactly what our freshmen and sophomores did: the boys stuck to the structure points and did what the coaches asked of us."
"We came into this tournament wanting to improve," said sophomore
Sam Walsh. "One of our biggest emphases was playing well and having a good attitude and our efforts paid off."
"Our freshmen have done a good job getting familiar with the system and we have been able to blend well thus far," said Schumacher. "Tomorrow, we will look to keep our systems straight, share the ball and stay away from selfish-play."
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Bears will return to Treasure Island on Sunday when they will face Utah in their first match. The Utes finished second in Pool C with wins against USC (31-14) and CCAC (21-14) and a loss to Cal Poly 24-10 in their final match of the afternoon. The other quarterfinalists in the tournament are Arizona, Santa Clara, UCLA, Stanford, Cal Poly, and San Diego. Should the Bears win, they will play the winner of the match between Arizona and Santa Clara which will take place at 11:20 a.m. directly after Cal faces Utah.
