STANFORD, Calif. – Cal women's tennis assured itself of at least one player reaching the singles semifinals when three Golden Bears – Anna Bright, Haley Giavara and Valentina Ivanov – advanced out of Saturday's singles round of 16 at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships. Freshmen Giavara and Ivanov will play each other in Sunday's quarterfinals, while Bright will face Mariia Kozyreva of Saint Mary's. Two Cal duos also moved into Sunday's main draw doubles round of 16 at the Taube Family Tennis Center.
 
Bright, a junior ranked 42nd and seeded sixth, bested Washington's ninth-seeded Natsuho Arakawa, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, in the main draw round of 16. Giavara and Ivanov have yet to drop a set in singles, with Giavara defeating Washington's Sedona Gallagher, 6-4, 6-3, and Ivanov topping Gonzaga's Kate Broerman, 6-3, 6-0, in the round of 16.
 
Julia Rosenqvist, Cal's highest ranked (24th) and seeded (second) player at regionals, lost in an upset to Washington State's Melissa Ates, 6-2, 6-4. Cal junior Katerina Stloukalova didn't lose a set in the first three rounds, until she fell in the round of 16 to Stanford's eighth-seeded and 60th-ranked Janice Shin, 7-6(1), 6-4.
 
In the doubles round of 32, the top-seeded Ivanov and Rosenqvist beat San Francisco's Arianna Capogrosso and Rita Colyer, 8-2, to move on to a round of 16 clash with Oregon's Rifany Kahfiani and Allison Mulville. Meanwhile, the Cal pair of Bright and Giavara defeated Sacramento State's Grace Dodd and Jayden Nielson, 8-1, and next battle Lauren Ko and Sara Tsukamoto of UC Davis on Sunday.
 
Regionals conclude on Tuesday.
