Bears Drop Road Contest At UC Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – No. 8 California suffered a 13-10 overtime loss to fourth-ranked UC Santa Barbara on the road on Sunday despite multi-goal performances from four different Bears.
 
Saturday marked Cal's third straight overtime match and fifth of the season. The Bears fell to 10-7 overall while UC Santa Barbara (16-6) recorded its second victory over Cal this fall. Safak Simsek tallied two goals and two assists for a four-point effort in the loss.
 
Heading into overtime tied 9-9, Cal was outscored by the Gauchos 4-1 over the extra six minutes of action. Cal led just once all match, 9-8, when Joe Molina scored a power-play goal with 3:30 left in regulation after Garrett Dunn drew an exclusion. The contest featured five ties throughout.
 
The Bears scored four consecutive goals over a near eight-minute span in the third and fourth periods to take the 9-8 lead. Jordan Hoover, Molina and Nikos Delagrammatikas all scored during the run.
 
Freshmen Adrian Weinberg (10 saves) and Nikolaos Papanikolaou (two goals, one drawn exclusion and three steals) impressed in the loss.

NOTABLES
  • Cal is 2-3 in overtime matches this season.
  • Weinberg's 10-save effort marked the eighth time this season that he has recorded 10 or more.
  • Simsek has scored at least once in all 17 matches this year.
  • Molina led the team with two drawn exclusions to go along with his two-goal performance.

NEXT TIME
Cal will hit the road again next weekend to face No. 2 UCLA at 1 p.m. (PT) on Saturday, Nov. 2 in Los Angeles.
