Hunter, Kaya Advance In Singles In Tulsa
TULSA, Okla. –
Kent Hunter and
Can Kaya each won twice in pre-qualifying singles on opening day of the ITA All-American Championships on Saturday, with the Cal men's tennis players moving closer to reaching qualifying singles at the national tournament.
Hunter, playing at the Case Tennis Center at the University of Tulsa, defeated UT-Chatanooga's Simon Bustamante, 6-3, 6-1, in the round of 256. The Golden Bear sophomore then beat Virginia Tech's Brandon Perez, 6-1, 6-4, in the round of 128. Hunter will next play Rice's Karol Paluch in the round of 64 on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. CT.
Kaya first knocked off Louisiana's Kacper Dworak, 6-4, 6-2, in the round of 256, before upsetting Liberty's fourth-seeded Josh Wilson, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(5). The Cal junior will face Wichita State's Elio Lago in Sunday's round of 64.
All-American pre-qualifying singles conclude on Sunday, with the qualifying singles and doubles tournaments slated for Monday and Tuesday and the main draws scheduled for Oct. 9-13 in Tulsa.
