Alexis Nelson won a doubles title at the Saint Mary's Fall Invitational.
MALIBU, Calif. – Cal women's tennis closed out the Women's Collegiate Classic with an unbeaten Sunday at Pepperdine's Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
Freshman
Haley Giavara posted another win over a ranked opponent, in a 6-4, 6-1 result over Michigan's 47th-ranked Giulia Pairone, 6-4, 6-1, and freshman teammate
Valentina Ivanov beat another Wolverine in Alyvia Jones, 6-3, 6-3, in consolation singles. Each first-year Bear finished with a 3-1 singles record in Malibu. Cal's 42nd-ranked
Anna Bright – who was 2-2 in singles at the tournament – saved four match points to edge Arizona State's Sammi Hampton, 7-6(2), 5-7, 7-5, on Sunday.
Bright and Ivanov completed a 2-1 doubles run in Malibu with a 6-1 victory over San Diego's Kati Kukaras and Solymar Colling in consolation doubles on Sunday. Giavara, meanwhile, teamed with North Carolina's Sophia Patel to best ASU's Hampton and Samantha Alicea, 6-3.
"Most of our team competed in back-to-back weekends, including last week's Cal Fall Invitational, and that was a big test for us to see where we're at with our training," Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus said. "It was great competition, and to be able to finish undefeated today in a big tournament was something I was really pleased to see."
MORAGA, Calif. – Cal's run in the Saint Mary's Fall Invitational ended on Sunday, when Cal senior
Alexis Nelson and Wisconsin's Melissa Pick won the doubles consolation final when their opponents from UC Davis withdrew.
Nelson got to play a doubles match when she paired with Cal teammate
Katerina Stloukalova to defeat the Badgers' Ava Markham and Charmaine Seah, 8-4, in consolation action.
In consolation singles, Nelson defeated Sacramento State's Jenna Dorian, 4-6, 6-3, 10-8, while Stloukalova fell to San Jose State's Klara Milojkovic, 4-6, 7-6(5), 10-7.
"In Moraga, it was great to see some of our upperclassmen continue their progress and get some good match play," Augustus said. "We had good results in singles and doubles. That bodes well for the group heading into regionals in a week or so, as many of the teams at the Moraga event will be at our regional championships. And it's good for them to compete against some of our regional opponents who were not at our Cal Fall Invitational."
Before the ITA Northwest Regional Championships – which begin on Oct. 18 at Stanford – the Bears turn their attention to the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Cal freshman
Erin Richardson is seeded 13th in qualifying singles, which start Monday, with Richardson playing Syracuse's Sofya Golubovskaya at 10:15 a.m. CT.
