Bears Close Fall In Tempe
TEMPE, Ariz. – California women's tennis closed the fall half of the regular season by winning five of seven games on Sunday at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational. Cal junior
Julia Rosenqvist, ranked 24th in the nation, finished unbeaten in singles at ASU with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Ohio State's Irina Cantos Siemers.
Â
Rosenqvist also paired with
Jasie Dunk to win in doubles, with the Cal duo defeating Michigan's Chiara Lommer and Anca Craciun, 6-3. Cal seniors
Katerina Stloukalova and
Alexis Nelson lost in doubles to the Wolverines' Nicole Hammond and Bella Lorenzini, 6-3.
Â
Also in singles, Dunk held off Michigan's Lanie Van Lange, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0(3), Stloukalova upended Ohio State's Cindy Chen, 6-2, 6-1, and
Jessica Zeynel defeated Texas Tech's Isa Di Laura, 6-2, 6-1. Nelson fell to Michigan's Lera Patiuk, 6-2, 6-4.
Â
Along with the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, the Sun Devils' tournament represented the last tournament of the fall for head coach
Amanda Augustus' Golden Bears.
Â
"Amanda and I were really pleased with the results this week," Cal assistant coach
Zack Warren said. "We have a talented group that is equally eager to work, which gives us a ton to look forward to this year.
Â
"Anna, Haley and Val represented the team at a really high level at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships. They picked up seven quality wins, most of those against the top 20 players in the country.
Â
"Haley and Anna had a really special run to the doubles semifinals, losing to the No. 1 team in the country in a super tiebreaker. Val picked up another great singles win this fall. And Haley had a tournament to remember defeating Stanford's Michaela Gordon, the nation's sixth-ranked player, and North Carolina's Alexa Graham, the fourth-ranked player in the country. Haley was one of only two freshmen in the nation to reach the quarterfinals of the fall national championships. We're very proud of how all three of them represented the team.
Â
"The ASU crew put together some terrific results in Tempe, with Julia going undefeated in singles and picking up a couple significant wins along the way. Overall, it was a great week for the Bears."
Â
The Bears return to the courts when they host their annual Cal Winter Invitational from Jan. 7-9 in Berkeley.
