Men's Gymnastics Signs A Pair
Cal Signs Two Gymnasts To Its 2019 Signing Class
BERKELEY - California men's gymnastics signed a pair of gymnasts to its 2019 signing class. Noah Newfeld (Plano, Texas) and David Rauchwerger (San Francisco) have signed national letters of intent, as announced on Wednesday by head coach
JT Okada.
Although Newfeld comes to Cal by way of Plano, Texas, he was born in Santa Cruz, so he has some California roots. Competing for his club team - World Olympic Gymnastics Academy - Newfeld was a two-time JE national qualifier in 2017 and 2018, as well as a Region 3 Elite team selection in 2018.
Newfeld also gives back to his community. While traveling to Japan to learn more about his heritage and culture, he volunteers at an annual event there to teach gymnastics to children at homeless shelters.
"I'm very excited to welcome Noah to the team," Okada said. "He's our first Texas gymnast in quite some time, and I'm happy to say that he will bring a number of clean and precise events to our team, including pommel horse and parallel bars."
Rauchwerger continues a long lineage of family members who are Cal alums, including his brother, Michael, a former member of the men's gymnastics team. Rauchwerger, who hopes to become a doctor, represented the United States at the 2017 Maccabiah Games. He is a three-time member of the Northern California State All-Star team (2016-17, 19). As a four-time national championship qualifier, he took home the silver medal in the all-around at the 2019 state championships. He also won gold on floor in 2017. He won the bronze in the all-around and the gold on parallel bars at the 2016 state championships. His club team, Accel Gymnastics Club, finished second at the state and regional championships in 2019.
"David is a Bay Area native who will bring power to the team in both floor and vault," Okada said. "He has a lot of potential on other events, as well, and I can't wait to see him become a Bear. After coaching his brother for four years, I'm happy to welcome another Rauchwerger to the Cal gymnastics family."
