Cal Women's Golf Signs Pair Of Top Prospects
Ochoa, Jin To Join Bears For 2020-21
BERKELEY - The Cal women's golf team bolstered its future Thursday with the signing of two student-athletes to a National Letter of Intent.
Cristina Ochoa of Bogota, Colombia and Mika Jin of Fremont each submitted their intention of joining the Golden Bear program. They will enroll at Cal in the fall of 2020.
Ochoa, the second Colombian to join the Bears' program, has won multiple amateur events and is a two-time national champion. Earlier this year, she was selected to play for the women's team at Copa Andes – a match play event in South America. Ochoa has represented her country in multiple tournaments as a junior.
"Cristina is really a perfect fit for Cal," Cal head coach
Nancy McDaniel said. "Her academics, her approach to the game – both mentally and physically – and her commitment and competitive nature make her an obvious choice for us. We're very fortunate to have such a passionate player join our program. She's a wonderful addition."
Ochoa set a course record (62) in winning the San Andres International Stroke Play event in her home country earlier this year and won the Annika Latin America Invitational in 2018. She also finished in second place at the 2017 Doral Publix Junior Golf Classic.
"Cristina really has a talent for scoring," McDaniel said. "That's something that stands out about her game. Her impressive scores come from her strong mental approach and her feel on the green – these traits are priceless."
Jin is another junior standout who won the 2017 AJGA Reno/Tahoe Junior at Arrow Creek and the 2018 AJGA Las Vegas Junior at Reflection Bay. She also is a two-time Junior Tour of Northern California Player of the Year.
"Mika is a very solid player with a good golf mind with great experience," McDaniel said. "She's an all-around consistent player. You don't see her scores waver too much."
Jin has twice qualified for the CIF State Championship, taking second place in 2018. She finished in the top-20 at the 2019 Girls Junior PGA Championship and advanced to the round of 16 at the 2019 U.S. Girls Junior Championship in Stevens Point, Wisc.
"Mika has a very good handle and control of her game," McDaniel said. "She has a very mature way about her and great awareness. We are looking forward to working with her as she progresses to the next level."Â
The 2019-20 Bears completed the fall season earlier this month at the Pac-12 Preview. The spring season commences in February.
