Bears Look To Finish Fall Strong At Pac-12 Preview
Cal Placed Second In Event Last Year
KAILUA KONA, HI – The Cal women's golf team closes out the fall season this week on the islands, where the Golden Bears will compete in the Pac-12 Preview on Monday-Wednesday at the Nanea Golf Club.
The annual tournament features all 11 teams that sponsor women's golf in the Pac-12, along with host Hawai'i. The three-day, 54-hole tournament commences Monday with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. PT.
"This is a chance to get everything from earlier this season out of our head so we can come into the spring feeling solid," Cal head coach
Nancy McDaniel said. "We are trying to go out and put a few rounds together and go into the spring with a little more spring in our step."
The Pac-12 features six nationally ranked teams, including four in the top-10 – No. 1 Stanford, No. 2 Arizona State, No. 5 USC and No. 8 Oregon.
"It's a great field," McDaniel said. "Every year, the Pac-12 is the best conference in women's golf. To have the opportunity to go out and compete against these teams is awesome."
The Bears have struggled at times this fall but also defeated Stanford in The Big Match last month. Cal finished in second place in last year's Pac-12 Preview, one stroke behind Arizona.
Two members of the Bears placed in the top-10 individually last season, and both are back this year. Sophomore
Katherine Zhu tied for fifth and senior
Maria Herraez Galvez tied for eighth.
Sophomore
Elena Arias also competed for Cal last season and finished in a tie for 45
th place.
"We have three players who have played this course before and have played it well," McDaniel said. "We're hoping we might get a glimpse of the real Bears. It's no secret we've been struggling. We've had a couple of weeks to get things straightened out. We're feeling pretty solid and healthy going into this last tournament of the fall."
