NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – Cal freshman Haley Giavara posted another top-10 upset win in singles and combined with Anna Bright to advance in doubles on Thursday at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.

Giavara defeated Stanford's sixth-ranked and 14th-seeded Michaela Gordon, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, in the main draw round of 32 to advance to the round of 16. Earlier this season, the talented first-year Golden Bear also upset Duke's fifth-ranked Kelly Chen, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. On Friday at 9 a.m., Giavara will face yet another top-10 opponent in North Carolina's fourth-ranked and fourth-seeded Alexa Graham in the round of 16.

Also in the main draw round of 32, fellow Cal freshman Valentina Ivanov fell to UCLA's second-seeded Abbey Forbes, 6-0, 6-2. In the consolation singles round of 32, Cal's 42nd-ranked Anna Bright lost to Penn's 63rd-ranked Juliia Bryzgalova, 6-1, 7-5.

Bright later teamed with Giavara to knock off Northern Arizona's Mimi Bland and Adrianna Sosnowska, 6-3, 6-3, in the main draw doubles round of 16. The two Bears will next play Wake Forest's 23rd-ranked MC Meredith and Eliza Omirou in the quarterfinals at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
