Cal Sweeps Pool At PAC 7s
Bears Face UCLA In Sunday Semifinal
STANFORD, Calif. – The Golden Bears swept Pool A Saturday at the PAC Rugby 7s Championship, beating Washington State, Utah and USC by the combined score of 125-12 at Steuber Rugby Stadium.
California takes on UCLA in the cup semifinals at 11:55 a.m. on Sunday, followed by the second semifinal between Arizona and Utah. If the Bears defeat the Bruins, they will face the Wildcats or Utes in the cup championship final, kicking off at 2:06 p.m. PT.
Sunday's action at the PAC 7s airs live on Pac-12 Network's Bay Area, Los Angeles and Mountain markets, and streams live on pac-12.com and the Pac-12 Now app.
In Saturday's three contests, Cal scored a total of 21 tries while four Bears -- sophomores
Nick Bloom and
Sam Walsh, junior
Oliver Sharpe and freshman
Alex Brundage – tallied three apiece, including a hat trick for Brundage against Utah. Sophomore
Jack Gallagher collected the majority of the team's conversions, going 8-for-12 in his attempts.
"We did mostly OK on the day," said head coach Jack Clark. "We didn't do as well in the last game as we would have hoped, but we were able to spread the minutes around and we will look to put out our best available team tomorrow."
All 15 players on Cal's tournament roster made at least one appearance Saturday, while eight registered minutes in all three games.
At last year's PAC 7s, the Bears won their sixth conference 7s championship in the previous seven years, beating Arizona, 33-5, in the cup final. In 2019, the road to the conference crown for Cal requires consecutive matches against UCLA and the Utah/Arizona winner.
It is a challenge that forces the Bears to focus on their immediate task: UCLA. Cal is 13-5 all-time in 7s against the Bruins but has dropped their last two meetings in 7s.
"In the first two games today, we focused on our communication and talking on defense," said senior
Thomas Spradling. "Tomorrow, we'll look to continue that communication."
"When our has offense performed well, we've maintained our pattern and stayed connected as a team," said sophomore
Sam Walsh. "We need to continue fostering that."
