NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – On Saturday, California's Anna Bright led another doubles partner deep into the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, and this year got one round further before the two Golden Bears fell in the semifinals. Bright, a junior, and freshman Haley Giavara battled N.C. State's top-ranked and top-seeded Anna Rogers and Alana Smith but lost 6-2, 5-7, 10-5.
 
Last year, Bright partnered with Jasie Dunk at fall nationals and lost in the quarterfinals.
 
Bright and Giavara finished this fall with a 6-2 record, with both losses coming in semifinals, including in the ITA Northwest Regional Championships.
 
Saturday's result ended Cal's run in the annual championship tournament. All three Bears – Bright, Giavara and freshman Valentina Ivanov – who competed at fall nationals did well. Along with Bright and Giavara reaching the final four in what was their second tournament as a doubles team, the three Bears all competed in the singles main draw. Giavara in particular stood out, winning three times – twice against opponents ranked in the top 10 – to reach the singles quarterfinals.
 
TEMPE, Ariz. – Cal's 24th-ranked Julia Rosenqvist remained unbeaten in singles on Saturday at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational when the Swede defeated Mississippi State's 41st-ranked Emma Antonaki, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
 
Rosenqvist, a junior, improved her singles record to 8-3.
 
Jasie Dunk also won in singles, with the Cal junior besting San Diego's Jessi Muljat, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
 
Cal will conclude the first half of the season on Sunday, as the Sun Devils' annual tournament comes to a close.
