Cal Tops San Jose State In Unique Dual
Bears, Spartans Close Out 2019 With Series Of Unusual Events
BERKELEY – Top-ranked Cal and San Jose State staged a unique dual meet at Legends Aquatic Center Saturday morning to close out the fall term before the teams take a break for the holidays. Filled with such events as the 300-yard backstroke relay and the 300 individual medley swum in reverse order, the Golden Bears swept all 14 events to post a final advantage of 199-57.
The morning began with a trio of 300-yard relays, starting with the backstroke and followed by breaststroke and butterfly relays. Individual events included the 600-yard freestyle, the 150-yard butterfly and the 300-yard free. The only "regular" swimming race contested was the 50 free, won by Cal's
Maddie Murphy in 23.54.
The meet ended with the 250-yard free relay, which featured legs of 25, 50, 75 and 100 yards and could be swum in any order. The quartet of seniors
Abbey Weitzeil,
Aislinn Light,
Keaton Blovad and Murphy touched first for Cal in 1:59.34, while the sophomore squad of
Alicia Wilson,
Isabel Ivey,
Elise Garcia and
Ema Rajic was a close second in 2:01.12.
The only double-winner on the day was Golden Bear diver
Briana Thai, who captured the 3-meter event with a score of 314.85 and the 1-meter springboard with a total of 299.18.
Cal returns to action in January, starting with the divers heading to Los Angeles for the UCLA Invitational Jan. 17-19. The Bears then host their final home dual meets of the season the following week when Arizona visits Jan. 24 and Arizona State will be in Berkeley Jan. 25.
