Men's Basketball Falls At Santa Clara, 71-52

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) -- California men's basketball wrapped up a two-game road stretch with a loss at Santa Clara, falling to the Broncos 71-52 Saturday afternoon at the Leavey Center.

Despite scoring contributions from nine players, Matt Bradley was the lone Golden Bear to score in double figures. He poured in 14 points to record his eighth game in double digits this season. Kareem South and Grant Anticevich each finished with 9 points.

Guglielmo Caruso had 16 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, and Santa Clara built an early double-digit lead to coast past the Bears.

DJ Mitchell added 14 points and seven rebounds, and Jalen Williams scored 12 points.

The Broncos never trailed after Caruso's two free throws made it 19-18 midway through the first half and led by 19 behind the 1-2 punch of Caruso and Vrankic.

The Bears went without a field goal for nearly five minutes from 8:27 to 3:56 in the first half, which allowed the Broncos a 15-4 run in that span, including three 3-pointers, and in the second half the scoring woes continued as the Bears made just five more field goals. Bradley was the lone Bear to connect on more than one field goal, going 2-6, but Cal continued its strong shooting at the free throw line, going 13-14 in the second half and shooting 80.8 percent for the game.

Cal finished with a season-high 10 steals after setting a team-high 7 Wednesday at San Francisco.
