LA JOLLA, Calif. – California men's tennis had a tough start to its stay in La Jolla, as the 47th-ranked Golden Bears lost to No. 32 Oklahoma State, 4-2, on Thursday at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. The Cowboys clinched the victory when Maxim Tybar defeated Cal sophomore Jack Molloy, 6-3, 6-7, 6-2, at court-three singles.

Cal fell to 2-5 following the nonconference match, while the Cowboys improved to 7-4.

Oklahoma State clinched the doubles point when the pair of Brady Draheim and Matej Vocel upset Cal's 42nd-ranked pair of Molloy and junior Mert Zincirli.

The Bears started strong in singles, winning twice to take a 2-1 lead. Cal junior Dominic Barretto first beat Drahem on court six, 6-2, 6-4, and then freshman Yuta Kikuchi topped OSU's Mathiu Scaglia, 6-2, 7-6.

But the Bears dropped the next three matches to lose to the Cowboys.

"Credit to Oklahoma State for playing a solid match against us today," said Director of Cal Men's Tennis Peter Wright. "They put us on our heels in doubles, and they kept the pressure on us in singles.

"We are growing as a team, and today was a growing pain for us. We have to spend more time focusing on the basics, and we can't allow ourselves to miss opportunities when they're presented to us. We have to regroup and start our upward climb. The ingredients are here, and we're more than capable. Now it's time for our team to dig deep and find our identity."

On Thursday evening, the pair of Bjorn Hoffmann and Dominic Barretto competed in the Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship, also at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. The Bears beat the UC Davis duo of Dariush Jalali and Chethan Swanson, 8-6, in the opening round of 128. Several Cal pairs earned first-round byes and will play their first matches in the tournament on Friday. The pair of Cal sophomores Ben Draper and Thomas Wright will also play a round of 128 match on Friday.

The Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship ends on Sunday.
