Cal Visits British Columbia Sunday

2nd Meeting In Back-To-Back Matches With UBC

BERKELEY -- The Golden Bears travel to Vancouver, Canada, on Sunday, March 3, for a 1 p.m. meeting with British Columbia at the Gerald McGavin UBC Rugby Centre.

Sunday's match between California (9-0, 1-0 PAC) and the Thunderbirds (14-4, 10-3 B.C. Premier) comes eight days after the Bears beat British Columbia, 24-22, on Witter Rugby Field. Cal will start 15 different players in Canada compared to the lineup that started the Feb. 23 contest in Berkeley.

Cal's last visit to UBC was March 4, 2018, when the Bears had the match tied after 20 minutes and stayed within eight through minute 60 but were defeated by the Thunderbirds, 49-25. Fifteen full changes were also made for that starting lineup compared to the one that had beaten British Columbia in the Cal-hosted leg a week earlier.

The Bears' last victory at UBC came on March 23, 2015, when All-America Jake Anderson kicked a penalty as time expired to give Cal a 23-21 win.

"We're looking forward to the challenge," said head coach Jack Clark. "There is much to learn from playing these matches. Our approach is to share the lessons throughout our ranks as much as possible, thus the 15 new starters in our lineup."

After their trip to Canada, the Bears remain on the road for a Saturday, March 9, trip to UCLA to play the Bruins in PAC Rugby Conference action, followed by a Friday night trip to Santa Cara University on March 15. The team returns to Witter Rugby Field Saturday, March 16, when Cal welcomes generations of former players back for Homecoming, with special recognition to the 25th Reunion of the 1994 National Collegiate Champions, the 20th Reunion of the 1999 National Collegiate Champions and the 15th Reunion of the 2004 National Champions. The Bears kick off Homecoming on March 16 at 1 p.m. against Utah preceded by an 11 a.m. curtain raiser against Humboldt State.
