Cal-Stanford Postgame Quotes

California Head Coach Wyking Jones

Overall thoughts:
"Before the game I told our guys to empty the tank, leave it all out on the floor. work as hard as you can work work to exhaustion to the point where you are asking to come out of the game because you're giving everything you got, and I'll get you out of the game and put someone else in, and I'll get  you back in there because we need fresh bodies out there. They emptied the tank today. I felt they gave us everything they had. They played together. They looked like a cohesive group. I'm very proud of the effort and the fight that they showed today, but we came up short. We continue to work, we continue to trust the process, we continue to stay tight and you know, they gave us 40 minutes today. They gave us 40 minutes of effort, and fight, and grit, and I was very happy of our effort."

On overturning the call:
"First of all, I didn't know that you would overturn a call. Mike Reed is a great official and he went to the monitor and saw something different, so I have to respect the call."

"It's tough. It's a blow cause you think you're that much closer to winning the game, but you know, its sports. It happens."

California Forward Justice Sueing

On emotions after the game:
"In all, I am proud of our guys today, playing off of our season we keep having to build up, and I think we keep building up and I think we are going to end up with a win. Today I felt like, what coach said, we put in our 40 minutes together. It's a trust-the-process thing and we are getting there. Everyone can see it that we are finally playing like a unit. We just need to capitalize on a few plays and know that it's going to help us win the game."

On the reverse call:
"There were a lot of calls before then that we are not going to agree with and all, but at the end of the day there are a lot of plays we ourselves made mistakes on that could have prevented us from getting in that situation. When it comes down to it the ref made the call and you have to continue on."

California Center Connor Vanover

On Stanford Defense:
"They left the middle open a lot in the zone, and they're letting the pop open off the ball screen so I think I just had to focus on knocking down shots and underneath they left lobs open, so just getting the points where my teammates could get me the ball and I think that's where it was."

On confidence in his shot:
"Once I got into the game, and getting into the flow, I was just into the flow of it. Do one good play, and it leads up with another one, so for me my confidence is a big thing. Going into the game and knocking a shot or two down and doing some good defense really helps motivate me and I think motivates my teammates too."

Stanford Head Coach Jerod Haase

On final minutes of the game:
"I suppose we made a few more plays than they did, but they made plays. I give them a lot of credit. It wasn't like we shut them down and we just took over control. It was bit by bit. We had one more stop in a minute and a half stretch, and the next one, and one more free throw to go in. Both teams really competed. Again, it wasn't something we just completely took control of. We made enough plays down the stretch and I'm extremely proud of the guys. The thing that's most exciting is in the last 6-8 minutes, when things hadn't gone well throughout the game, when I looked in the guys' eyes, if there was ever a sense of wavering a little bit, we were able to get it back instantly. And, the guys I think believed in what we were doing."

On defensive challenges guarding Connor Vanover:
"I think we were a step slow every once in a while, whether he's in our zone with our guards getting back to him as a shooter, or in ball screen situations our bigs were a bit slow as well. With him, if he has a half step, he knows nobody is going to be able to challenge his shot. And so he poses some challenges. And when he is making shots like that, he's awfully good."

On the block charge:
"I can't act like I saw if he was in our out, but in terms of general spacing, I thought he was out pretty far. I did feel it was a dire situation, so I felt very excited when they went to the monitor knowing there was still hope in that situation. But it was good because the close out to begin with. We ran them off the three point line, and then for Josh to make a big time play, a senior who continues to get better and believes in what we are doing, to make a play like that is really cool."

Stanford Forward KZ Okpala

On the final six minutes of the game to complete the comeback:
"We went down. Bryce Wills came in and played really hard. He's always a spark off the bench, and he really got us going."

On big performance after lull:
Meeting with my coaches for sure -- they have confidence in me. So, when I go out there, I have to give it my all."

Stanford Center Josh Sharma

On review on block charge:
"I didn't even know what they were reviewing. I just saw them around the monitor. Yeah, I was hoping for the best. I'm pretty sure my feet were outside and I was set. I was surprised they didn't call it a charge initially, but yeah, I'm glad they were able to change that one."

On interaction with the crowd:
"It always feels good when you can silence an opposing crowd in their home court. Road wins are hard to get, especially against your rivals. So, it felt really good."
