STANFORD – Sophomore Brigit Mulder scored three goals and junior All-American Emma Wright added two, but the No. 4 Cal women's water polo team fell to No. 2 Stanford 17-10 on Sunday at the Stanford Invitational.

The Cardinal led 5-2 after the first quarter and extended to an 8-3 advantage with just under three minutes to play before halftime. Cal (5-1) put together surge before the break, getting goals from Mulder and junior Hannah DeRose to trim it to 8-5 at the break.

Stanford extended once again to 12-6 in the third quarter before the Bears scored back-to-back goals by sophomore Elli Protopapas and senior Sarah Siepker to make it 12-8 with 6:08 to play. But Cal would get no closer.

Siepker had three steals for the Bears while center Kitty Lynn Joustra had eight earned exclusions.

Cal returns to the pool Saturday with a home date with No. 8 Pacific at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The opening sprint is at 12 p.m.
