VALLEJO, Calif. – Starting an all-freshman-and-sophomore squad on a cold Wednesday night in their first road match since Jan. 19, the Golden Bears defeated Cal Maritime, 60-3, on Bodnar Field.
 
California (6-0, 0-0) saw eight student-athletes scored a total of 10 tries, with two apiece from sophomores Marcus Shankland and Oliver Sharpe. Freshman match-night captain Jack Gallagher booted five conversions (5-for-10) and directed traffic from the scrumhalf position.
 
"Grateful to get the opportunity to start," said Gallagher. "It meant a lot to be selected."
 
The Keelhaulers (5-2,2-0 NSCRO CRC) got on the board in the 22nd minute, when flyhalf Michael Mukuru connected on a 28-meter penalty kick.
 
The Bears return home to host Arizona State in Cal's PAC Rugby Conference opener Saturday, Feb. 9, at 1 p.m. on Witter Rugby Field.
