LOS ANGELES – Cal got off to a rough start to its Los Angeles road trip on Friday, when the Golden Bears lost, 4-2, to seventh-ranked UCLA in a nonconference dual match. The Bruins clinched the victory when Govind Nanda beat Cal sophomore Jack Molloy, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, on court three at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

Cal's record fell to 1-3, while the Bruins improved to 3-0.

The Bears had taken a 1-0 lead after capturing the doubles point, with Molloy and Mert Zincirli clinching on court three. They later led 2-1 when Bjorn Hoffmann defeated the Bruins' Mathew Tsolakyan, 6-3, 6-2, at court-five singles.

The Bears also won at court-two doubles, with the 17th-ranked pair of Can Kaya and Paul Barretto topping Nanda and Ben Goldberg, 6-3. But Cal's eighth-ranked duo of Jacob Brumm and Yuta Kikuchi lost to Keegan Smith and Maxime Cressey in an upset on court one, 6-0.

In singles, after Hoffmann gave the lead back to the Bears at 2-1, Cal lost the next two to trail 3-2. Both remaining matches – on courts three court four – were in third sets, with Kikuchi tied with Patrick Zahraj, 6-4, 4-6, 3-3, on four. But that match was abandoned once UCLA clinched.

Cal next plays USC on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Trojans' Marks Tennis Stadium
