Bears Continue Trend Of Improvement
Cal Registers Its Season-Best Team Score For Fifth Meet In A Row
BERKELEY – There was a lot of hootin' and hollerin' as the Cal men's gymnastics team's meet with Stanford was winding down Saturday night, and it wasn't just because the Bears were putting together a season-best score on the high bar.
It was the culmination of Cal's best performance of the season, a display that also saw a season-best result on the pommel horse and several personal-best individual efforts.
"This is the most complete meet that we've competed in to date," Cal head coach
J.T. Okada said following the Bears' 415.800-404.000 loss to No. 2 Stanford. "As much as I tell the guys not to worry about the scores and just do our job, these guys are looking at the scores and they knew where we were at and where we need to be to get to that next level. They knew we were in the right direction. I think they will remember this meet."
The Bears' team score continued their impressive streak of improving on their overall performance in every meet this season. They finished with a 65.700 on the high bar and 64.800 on the pommel horse.
"It's been a crazy last five weeks," Okada said. "All the work that's gone into it. We've seen bits and pieces of it, but today we got to see a complete meet. I couldn't be happier with the performance of the team tonight."
Five of Cal's six competitors on the pommel horse set a career-high or season-high, with redshirt senior
Mitchell Awisus notching a personal-best of 13.500 and freshman
Matthew Randolph doing the same with a 13.600. Freshman
Darren Wong tied his best mark at 14.450 while senior
Aaron Mah (13.600) and sophomore
Joe Dixon (12.900) had their best numbers of the season.
"We have a great pommel horse team but we haven't shown that for the last four meets," Okada said. "Finally, we did a great job in that event. I'm really proud to showcase our skills there."
Wong (13.300), senior
Roshan Toopal (13.200) and junior
Kyte Crigger (12.800) each had career-highs on the high bar while sophomore
Shane Sadighi posted a season-high at 12.700.
Crigger also registered a career-high on the parallel bars at 13.750 and Sadighi had his best mark on the vault at 14.000. Wong set a career-high with an all-around score of 81.350.
The Bears will have a bye next week before visiting Stanford on Feb. 23 for the International Collegiate Open.
