Cal-Washington Postgame Quotes

California Head Coach Wyking Jones

Overall thoughts:
"I'm just so happy for my guys and my staff to get a huge win over a really, really good team. The last two days in practice the guys for some reason have been extra affectionate with each other. Our huddles have been tighter than they've ever been, just a ton of high-fives, just a ton of them loving each other to the point where my assistants are coming up to me going, 'What is going on, what's in the air right now that these guys are loving each other more than ever — since, all season?'"

"Today they gave me a little bit of indication that they would come out today and play well tonight and so my challenge to them before the game was, 'Let's hunt plays not shots.' Let's hunt to make the right play — whether it's for yourself to get a shot or for somebody else to get a shot. They 100 percent came out and did that. When you see 22 assists on 30 field goals made, that's just the epitome of sharing the ball and doing what it takes to get a good look, a good shot for us."

"Anytime you can come out of a game and feel like every single player that played for you tonight gave you something and extended himself and left it all out on the floor, that's a great feeling and usually it results in a win. So we were able to get a win tonight because everybody gave us something."

On atmosphere in the locker room:
"It was great — I'm soaking wet because they doused me with water — we had a good time in there celebrating the win. Like I said, I'm just so happy for the guys because they have gone through this losing streak and we have all stayed positive, we have all continued to work and fight and scratch and claw and we've gotten close so many times. For them to get a win tonight over a really, really good team just means a lot for us."

Adjustments in this second matchup with Washington
"What was different is we really did a great job on the defensive end in the second half. The challenge has always been, 'Okay, we do a great job defensively in the first, and then the defense goes away from our bench and we have a decline in our defense.' The defense was actually better in the second half. (Washington) shot 55 percent in the first half and they shot 42 in the second half, so we were able to make defensive plays. A huge rebound by Justice. The numbers won't show it but he made some really really key plays for us — two offensive rebounds and the defensive rebound at the end, three in the corner. I think he really stepped up and did a great job leading us tonight."

On Paris Austin's play:
"Paris gets nine assists, he 100 percent does his job. That's the challenge for him every night is just run the team, make sure we utilize the guys that can score and he did a great job of that tonight."

Thoughts on team's poise:
"They kept their composure. We turned it over a couple times, late, and they did as well, but the guys just continued to believe, more than anything. Connor continues to shine and kind of give us all a preview of how good he can be. Juhwan made some great defensive plays, and just everybody gave us something. Darius shot the ball well. Everybody gave us something that played tonight. That was what was key to us being able to get the win tonight."

Key to maintaining focus:
"I'm feeling like we can ride this and guys will be able to play with a lot more confidence and the blueprint is there. If we share the ball and play as a team, good things happen. This is really an exclamation point on that statement, that if you share the ball and play together — you hunt plays and not shots — good things happen. As long as we continue to do that I think we will be fine."

California Junior Guard Paris Austin

On emotion of winning a game after 16 game losing streak:
"It felt good to win the game. After losing so many games, we continued to come in every day and practice hard. Every game, we just have the same approach. We come out with the same attitude, staying positive and staying together. It felt really good to get this win today."

Thoughts down the stretch:
"We told each other we were going to stay together. We just wanted to defend and rebound. And once we got the ball, we slowed the ball down. Once we saw we had the lead with around 3 minutes left, we wanted to make sure we defended."

On tomorrow's practice:
"It's going to be a regular day for us. We know we have a game on Saturday, so we're going to come in with the same attitude. Obviously we're going to be happy we got a win today against a very good team, but same attitude and mindset we have."

California Forward Justice Sueing

On emotion of winning a game after 16 game losing streak:
"You know, I just say it's about time. We've been in a rough stretch for a minute now, all of 2019 pretty much. But, the most important thing is that we decided that we're going to stay together and not let the losses interfere with our relationship and how hard we play, and it brought us to this. We're looking forward to pushing the momentum heading into the Pac-12 tournament."

On difference in tonight's game:
"I say we've done about everything wrong in the last couple games where we give up the lead within the last five minutes. Going into this game, we were used to having that close, intense matchup. We made it a thing to make sure we stayed together and fight until the end. We had to get a stop, and we were on offense, and we pulled it together."

On emotions after the final buzzer:
"It was a relief…some weight off our shoulders. We've been working really hard and no one is giving up. There's a lot of heart in all these dudes. We're a young team, but we keep pushing. We're not going to let some adversity push us, and I think that's the main thing. It just shows tonight, we're going to keep pushing and keep going and hopefully swing this momentum into the end of the Pac-12."

California Center Connor Vanover

On emotion of winning a game after 16 game losing streak:
"We knew we had it in us, we just had to find it. It took a while, but now, moving forward, we have a clear head about beating Washington."

On mid-range jump-shot opportunities and offensive game plan:
"They were leaving me open in the beginning from mid-range. And I was knocking them down, so I just kept shooting."
