SAN JOSE, Calif.– No. 14 California women's gymnastics showcased its depth in its regular-season road finale, sweeping titles on all four events as five different gymnasts claimed wins. The Golden Bears topped San Jose State, 196.100-193.725, Friday night at San Jose State's Event Center.

Reigning Pac-12 Freshman of the Week Milan Clausi led the quintet of Bears with a pair of event titles on vault and floor. She shared the vault crown with Kyana George and Rachael Mastrangelo. Emi Watterson had another standout night, nabbing the uneven bars crown for the second week in a row and setting a career-best on vault, while Maya Bordas matched her career-high beam score for the beam crown.

"This is exactly where we want to be. What we're doing right now is a real team effort," said co-head coach Justin Howell.

Talitha Jones also had a stellar showing, finishing second on bars and beam and fourth on vault while setting new career-high totals on each of her three events.

Each of Cal's first four bar performers hit her routine, and Watterson once again wowed the crowd with a 9.925 to follow up on her career-best 9.95 last week at Sacramento State. Jones started her night off with a new career-high on the event, earning a 9.85 for second. Unfortunately, tentative performances caused back-to-back falls at the end of the lineup forced the Bears to count a fall for a 48.325 on the event.

"It's always difficult to start a meet counting a fall. I felt like on bars we were trying to be too perfect," Howell said. "We weren't as free and as loose as we'd like to be, and that caused some tight routines and led to two falls."

The score was enough for the Bears to edge the Spartans, 48.325-48.175, after the first rotation, and a 6-for-6 vault lineup helped Cal build its lead. Every single gymnast in the lineup tallied a 9.80 or higher, starting with Sylvie Seilnacht's leadoff 9.80. Watterson upped her career-best to 9.825, and Jones continued her strong outing with a career-best 9.825 as well. George, Clausi and Mastrangelo all tied for first with a trio of 9.85s, with Mastrangelo debuting her Yurchenko 1.5 for the first time in her collegiate career.

Including Mastrangelo's vault, for the first time this season Cal's lineup included three Yurchenko 1.5s for 10.0 start values.

"That's huge for us, especially at this point in the season. If we can dial those in heading into Pac-12 Championships, that's really big for our vault lineup," Howell said.

Cal matched its season-high floor total with another 6-for-6 rotation that saw career-highs from Chelsea Shu and Maya Bordas. The Bears logged a 49.250 with a pair of 9.85s from Shu and Bordas, plus a 9.875 from George for second and a 9.90 from anchor Clausi to win the event.

The Bears saved their best for last, using a 49.300 on beam to push their overall total past the 196.0 mark. Cal's 49.300 was its second-highest on the event all year, and matched the fifth-highest score on the event in school history. Jones led off with a 9.875 to take second, and Bordas anchored with a 9.90 to win her second event crown of the season.

"We put Talitha in the leadoff on beam, and she was dialed in and locked in. She nailed her performance. That's the way you want to start a beam rotation, and that's what we've been looking for in a leadoff," Howell said.

After Cal's six competitive routines, the Bears exhibitioned two beam routines, including one by Seilnacht that earned a 9.80, to go "8-for-8" on beam.

"I'm most proud of our beam rotation. We were super confident," Howell said. "We're in a great place where we can mix people in and out, and tonight really showcased our depth with those exhibitions."

The Bears return to Berkeley for their last home meet of the season, hosting Illinois and recent foes San Jose State and Sacramento State on Sunday, March 17 at 2 p.m. A live stream will be available at CalBears.com.
