Cal Drops Baker’s Dozen On Bruins

Three Matches Next Week Include Homecoming

LOS ANGELES — California scored 13 tries and shut out UCLA in PAC Rugby Conference play Saturday at Wallis Annenberg Stadium.

"UCLA were unlucky to not score a couple tries. Credit to them for staying at the match in the second half," said head coach Jack Clark. "We played well in spurts, but we have another level inside us."

Flyhalf Elliot Webb led all scorers with 20 points on two tries and five conversions (5-for-8), sophomore replacement winger Marcus Shankland scored two tries, freshman replacement Sam Walsh added six conversion points (3-for-5) and 11 student-athletes found the try zone as the Bears (10-1, 2-0 PAC) recorded their sixth shutout of 2019 in a controlled effort against the Bruins (9-3, 2-2 PAC).

"When we stuck to our structure we played quite well," said first-year scrumhalf Henry Poon, who played the entire match and scored a try in the 56th minute. "In coordinating the backs and forwards, I appreciate my teammates responding to my voice as a freshman."

"Henry's been great," said lock Sebastian Bader, who scored a try at minute 62. "As a team we showed some good moments, especially in the first half, but there's more that we can do. Next weekend especially, we want to play in a way that the players who came before us can be proud of."

Generations of former players will be back at Witter Rugby Field for Homecoming on Saturday, March 16, with special recognition for the 25th Reunion of the 1994 National Collegiate Champions, the 20th Reunion of the 1999 National Collegiate Champions and the 15th Reunion of the 2004 National Collegiate Champions. The Bears kick off Homecoming against Utah at 1 p.m. preceded by an 11 a.m. curtain raiser against Humboldt State.

Prior to their return to Strawberry Canyon, the Bears remain on the road for a Friday night trip to Santa Clara University on March 15. Kickoff is at 6 p.m.
