Bears Earn Pac-12 Swim Honors

Weitzeil Named Swimmer Of The Year; McKeever Tabbed Coach Of The Year

BERKELEY – Junior Abbey Weitzeil and head coach Teri McKeever both added to their list of honors for the 2018-19 season when they were recognized for their efforts by the Pac-12 Tuesday.

Weitzeil was named the Pac-12 Swimmer of the Year and McKeever was tabbed the league's Coach of the Year in a vote by the conference coaches.

Weitzeil won all three of her individual events at the Pac-12 Championships – the 50-yard free, 100-yard free and 200-yard free – and had a role on four victorious relays. At the NCAA meet last month, Weitzeil set an American record in capturing the 50 free national title, hitting the wall in 21.02. She also placed fourth in both the 100 and 200 free and helped the Bears to NCAA crowns in three different relays, including an NCAA and U.S. Open mark in the 400 free relay.

This marks the 12th time a Golden Bear has been honored as the Pac-12 Swimmer of the Year and the first for the program since Missy Franklin in 2015.

McKeever guided Cal to an NCAA runner-up finish – the 11th consecutive year the Bears have been among the top 3 nationally, which is the longest current streak in the country. McKeever was named the CSCAA National Coach of the Year for the Bears' NCAA result, and this is the eighth time she has been voted the conference Coach of the Year during her 27 seasons in Berkeley. As a team, Cal captured nine of the 18 swimming events at th 2019 Pac-12 meet. In addition to Weitzeil's trio of wins, Amy Bilquist claimed the 100 back and the Bears swept all five relays.
