Cal Wraps Up Crew Classic
Bears Gain Valuable Experience Against Talented Field At Crew Classic
SAN DIEGO – The Cal men's rowing team took on a field of talented crews from throughout the nation this weekend at the annual San Diego Crew Classic. The Golden Bears had four boats competing this weekend and won three of the their five finals. The third varsity eight and freshman eight's won their respective finals and finished 1-2 in the Men's Open Final while the varsity eight and second varsity eight took second to East Coast power Yale in their respective finals.
"It was a tough weekend of racing for the guys against some fast crews from Yale," said Cal head coach
Scott Frandsen. "The Varsity and Junior Varsity raced hard and learned a lot about producing our top speed on race day. That's what these early races are all about. I'm extremely confident in this group of student-athletes and know that we will find more speed in the coming weeks."
The Third Varsity eight won all three of its races on the weekend, topping the field in both the heat and final of the Men's Open while also winning the Men's 3V Final on Sunday by open water.
Cal's freshman eight won its heat on Saturday for the Derek Guelker Memorial Cup and followed through again on Sunday, beating the crew from Orange Coast for first. The freshman eight also competed in the Men's Open, finishing second to Cal's third varsity eight.
The second varsity eight won its heat on Saturday in convincing fashion before finishing second in Sunday's final in a tightly-contested race against the Bulldogs.
A speedy final in the Men's Copley Cup pitted the Bears against Yale, the defending IRA National Champions. The Bulldogs used a strong start to gain some early separation and the Bears were unable to overcome the deficit, despite a strong closing effort.
The Bears will be back in action this coming weekend at Redwood Shores, racing in the Stanford Invitational on April 13 and 14.
