Bears Return to the NCAAs
BERKELEY –  California is ready to dance again!
Â
After finishing the season ranked 11th, Cal earned its sixth consecutive trip to the NCAA 2019 National Collegiate Men's Gymnastics Championships Qualifier in Champaign, Ill., on April 19-20, announced the NCAA Men's Gymnastics Committee, Tuesday.
Â
Cal finished the regular season with notable highlights including a pair of 400-plus team scores for the first time under head coach
JT Okada, including a team-high performance 405.500 in a notable road win at Washington. Cal was also propelled throughout the year behind multiple career and season notes in nearly every outing.
Â
The Bears picked up another third place finish at the MPSF Championship in Norman, Okla., where they combined for a handful of top-10 finishes.
Â
Freshman
Darren Wong has also been an impetus for the upward tick of the Cal squad, earning a pair of CGA Rookie Gymnast of the Week nods and a MPSF Gymnast of the Week selection. Wong also picked up three all-around meet titles in his freshman campaign.
Â
"It's an honor to represent Cal at the NCAA Championships and I'm happy to say that we are able to do that yet again," said head coach
JT Okada. "The team has been diligent about its preparation throughout the regular season and qualification process. I'm very proud of their efforts."
Â
Last year, Cal advanced seven individuals to the championship round despite finishing last in its session at the team qualifier. Two of those individuals,
Yordan Aleksandrov, who graduated, and junior
Kyte Crigger stepped away as All-Americans. Crigger finished fifth on the floor, while Aleksandrov earned fourth on the high bar.
Â
The championships will begin with two pre-qualifying sessions conducted April 19 at the State Farm Center on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Â
Three teams and the top three all-around competitors not on one of the qualifying teams, plus the top three individuals on each event not already qualified on a team or as an all-around competitor, will advance from each pre-qualifying session to the finals session.
Â
Cal will participate in the team competition only with 11 other programs, including MPSF conference members Oklahoma and Stanford, while member Air Force will send individuals.
