Cal Selected To Play In NCAA Myrtle Beach Regional
Golden Bears To Play May 13-15
INDIANAPOLIS – Cal was selected to the 2019 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships on Wednesday during an announcement made live on GOLF Channel. The Golden Bears will be the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Myrtle Beach Regional hosted by Coastal Carolina and the Myrtle Beach Regional Sports Alliance at TPC Myrtle Beach in Murrelss Inlet, S.C.
"It's an exciting opportunity for these guys to show what they are capable of doing," Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf
Walter Chun said. "Last year we got sent to North Carolina and that was a tough draw, but I think that experience should bode well for us and give our guys a little more experience on what's ahead of them, in the sense that it's not going to be easy to make it to the NCAA Championships. But they should be ready and they should be well-prepared from last year's disappointment to help motivate them to get to the NCAA Championships."
A total of 81 teams and 45 individuals not on those teams will play May 13-15 at six 54-hole NCAA Regionals. The other five NCAA Regional sites are Simpsonville, Ky. (University of Louisville Golf Club; Host – Louisville); Stanford, Calif. (Stanford Golf Course; Host – Stanford); Athens, Ga. (University of Georgia Golf Course; Host – Georgia); Pullman, Wash. (Palouse Ridge Golf Club; Host – Washington State); and Austin, Tex. (University of Texas Golf Club; Host – Texas).
A top-five finish at the NCAA Myrtle Beach Regional would put Cal in the final field of 30 at the NCAA Championships for the seventh time in the last 10 seasons but the first time since 2016. Cal has advanced to the NCAA Championships on a total of 11 occasions (1995, '98, '99, 2000, '04, '10, '11, '12, '13, '14, '16) including a school-record five straight years from 2010-14.
Wake Forest (No. 3 Golfstat) is the top-seeded squad in the 14-team NCAA Myrtle Beach Regional followed by Cal (No. 10), Texas Tech (No. 15), Illinois (No. 23), Florida State (No. 27), UNLV (No. 34), Oregon (No. 39), Ohio State (No. 46), Northwestern (No. 50), Oregon State (No. 57), Cal State Fullerton (No. 68), Middle Tennessee (No. 115), VCU (No. 137) and Robert Morris (No. 247).
Fourteen teams and five individuals not on those teams will also compete at the NCAA Texas and Pullman Regionals while 13 teams and 10 individuals not on those teams are playing at the NCAA Georgia, Louisville and Stanford Regionals.
The top five teams and the top individual not on the five qualifying teams at each NCAA Regional will advance to a field of 30 teams and an additional six individuals at the 2019 NCAA Championships to be played May 24-29 at The Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.
