Five Bears Claim Pac-12 Academic Honors
BERKELEY – Five California men's tennis players earned Pac-12 All-Academic honors, the conference announced Tuesday, with sophomore
Can Kaya leading the way with a spot on the first team.
Jack Molloy claimed a berth on the second team, and
Jacob Brumm,
Ben Draper and
Bjorn Hoffmann all garnered honorable mention.

These are the first conference academic honors for all five Bears.
Â
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and compete in at least 50 percent of the team's regular-season events.

Kaya, who on May 7 earned the Golden Bear Award for compiling the team's highest GPA, is majoring in economics. The Ankara, Turkey, native had a strong year on the court as well, posting a 30-8 doubles record, which included a 25-6 mark with
Paul Barretto, and a 5-4 singles record. Kaya's 30 doubles wins lead the Bears.

Molloy, who hails from Gerrards Cross, England, is undeclared and intending to major in economics. He posted records of 14-14 in singles and 15-11 in doubles.

Hoffmann is majoring in legal studies. The product of Newport Beach, California, led Cal with 28 singles wins (to go with eight losses) and a 5-2 doubles record this season.

Draper, from Ashtead, England, intends to major in political economy. He was 18-11 in singles – including 15-6 in the dual-match season – and 10-9 in doubles in his sophomore season.

An intended astrophysics major, Brumm sports a 16-16 doubles record with just one partner – freshman
Yuta Kikuchi – this season. The postseason will continue for the Rancho Santa Fe, California, product and Kikuchi on May 21, when they start play in the NCAA Doubles Championship in Orlando, Florida, at the USTA National Campus.

The five Bears were major contributors to No. 24 Cal's 16-13 season that ended deep in the postseason. Hoffmann clinched the NCAA opening round of 64 win over Drake, while Draper

clinched the upset win over host and No. 15 Illinois in the round of 32. Molloy and Draper won in doubles in both matches, with the pair of Kaya and
Paul Barretto clinching the doubles point against the Illini. Brumm won in singles against Drake and, in the Pac-12 championship in April, clinched Cal's upset win over top-seeded and 13th-ranked UCLA in the semifinals.
