BERKELEY -- Even after its last match, the Cal beach volleyball team's historic season keeps gaining steam.

In a first for the program, Jordan Polo was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year on Thursday. In addition, sophomore Mima Mirkovic was named to the All-Pac-12 First Team for the second straight season and sophomore Caroline Schafer and Polo were each named to the Second Team.

This marks the first time in program history Cal has taken one of the conference's individual year-end awards.

Polo was honored for her spectacular play this season, going 17-10 on the year, including 15-9 from the No. 1 position. She was instrumental in the Bears' victory over No. 9 Long Beach State, taking down the 49ers No. 1 pair with Mirkovic as her partner in a dual-deciding 21-18, 12-21, 15-10 victory. Cal's win over Long Beach St. was the Bears' second triumph over a top-10 opponent in program history.

"I am so proud of Jordan. This is absolutely well deserved," Cal head coach Meagan Owusu said. "She has established herself as a force this season. I am looking forward to watching her progress throughout her collegiate career."

Polo was also named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team.

Playing all but one match from the No. 1 position, Mirkovic went 18-9 on the year. Schafer shifted throughout the lineup, playing matches at the No. 1, 2, and 3 position, Schafer finished the last six duals of the year at the No. 1 pair with Mirkovic.

"Mima and Caroline are two of the most dynamic players," Owusu said. "They had different partners and roles throughout the season and were able to rise to the occasion. This is such an honor for these two athletes and they deserve it!"

This is the first time Cal has had three players earn All-Pac-12 honors in the same season, another historic achievement in a season that has been full of them. Cal also saw its highest ranking in program history from both the AVCA and DiG Magazine this year and defeated more top-10 teams than ever before.
