BERKELEY - The Cal beach volleyball team has added four dynamic student-athletes for next season as the Bears continue to develop into one of the premier programs in the country.

Kate Bierly of San Juan Capistrano, Dana Waldburger of La Jolla, Ainsley Radell of Alamo and Madison Sundholm of Tucson, Ariz., will enroll at Cal in the fall and join the program for the 2020 season.

Bierly, 5-10, was a three-sport athlete at Saddleback Valley Christian High School, playing soccer and indoor volleyball in addition to beach volleyball. Bierly earned All-San Joaquin League First Team honors for her efforts in both indoor and beach volleyball.

"Kate is a high energy player and I am excited to see how she impacts our program, athletically and our team culture," Cal head coach Meagan Owusu said.

Bierly will be joined by her teammate at Wave Volleyball Club in San Diego, Dana Waldburger, a 5-foot-11 right-handed hitter and the younger sister of current Bear Abby Waldburger.

"Dana has a very strong arm," Owusu said. "She is a very physical player. I am excited to add another big hitter. With a defender-heavy team, it will be good to add another influence at the net."

Radell, 6-1, is a former indoor player who transitioned somewhat recently to the beach game. As an indoor player, she played for the Team USA Under-19 squad.

"It is really cool to see how far Ainsley has come in short period," Owusu said. "I expect her to impact the team immediately."

While she will have to adjust to the college game, Radell will at least be familiar with Cal's coaching staff. She has been training with Associate Head Coach Derek Olson and Volunteer Coach Paul Ariza at Kleos Beach Volleyball club.

Rounding out the incoming class is Sundholm, 5-10, another two-way player. Sundholm played beach volleyball for two years at Salpointe Catholic High School and was a member of the indoor team for four years, leading the Lancers to a pair of Arizona state championships.

"Madison is a very technically sound and versatile player with the ability to block or defend," Owusu said. "I am excited to see what role she takes on this team."

Bierly, Radell, Waldburger, and Sundholm will help to replace Mia Merino, Grace Campbell, and Karina Langli, who graduated last weekend.

Owusu said she expects the incoming recruits to hit the ground running.

"I am really excited about this class," she said. "They've been committed to Cal for a long time so this is something we've been excited about for for while. I am ready to see who will make an immediate impact on this program."
