Cal Set For NCAA Prelims In Sacramento

Cal Will Have 24 Entries Looking To Qualify For A Trip To The NCAA Championships

BERKELEY -- Cal track and field will send 24 student-athletes to Sacramento this week for the 2019 NCAA West Preliminary Championships where individuals will look to earn a bid to the NCAA Championships. Coming off of notable performances at the Pac-12 Championships, Cal will be competing over three days, May 23-25, at Hornet Stadium on the campus of Sacramento State.  
 
Each individual event will consist of a 48-person field while relays will have 24 squads looking to lock up a berth at the NCAA Championships. Both individuals and relays who finish in the top 12 will be continuing their seasons at the NCAA Championships in Austin from June 5-8.
 
Kicking off Cal's festivities on Thursday are Chrissy Glasmann and Silviu Bocancea. Glasmann, who holds the Cal school record in the event, will compete in the javelin. Bocancea will look to advance to the NCAA Championship for the second straight year in the hammer throw. Bocancea finished second in the event at the Pac-12 Championship and ranks second in school history in the event. Both of those events will begin at 12 p.m. on Thursday.
 
Paramveer Chohan and Jasher Foster will be the first Bears on the track as they are set to run the 400m hurdles. Chohan enters the meet with the seventh-highest mark in the event, which he clocked in at the Pac-12 Championships. His personal-best mark of 49.80 earned him second place at the conference championships and was his first time running sub-50. Foster, who is a 2018 MPSF Champion in the 60m hurdles will also be competing in the 100m hurdles on Friday.
 
Camryn Rogers, the 2019 Pac-12 Champion in the hammer throw will be facing familiar competition this weekend. While Rogers enters the meet in third place, she bested the top-two competitors en route to her conference title with a personal best throw of 69.79m.
 
Fellow conference champion Tuomas Kaukolahti marked his second consecutive Pac-12 triple jump title. Kaukolahti enters the meet ranked third with his mark of 16.50m, putting him less than six inches off of the top mark.  
 
The Bears' 4x100m relay team of Deshae Wise, Zion Corrales Nelson, Maisie Stevens and Jackie Patterson enter the competition with the 10th-best time in the region. The foursome took third at the Pac-12 Championship and they have the third-best mark in school history.
 
Iffy Joyner comes into the NCAA Prelims with the sixth-best mark in the west. The redshirt freshman threw 59.07m/193-9 at the Big Meet to set the Cal freshman record. Joshua Johnson ranks 14th in the west with a personal best throw of 19.27m/63-2.75.
