McMorris Claims Second In The Decathlon
Cal Freshman Sets Career Best With 7259 Points
TUCSON, Arizona – After setting three personal bests and sitting in second place after the first day,
Hakim McMorris did more of the same on day two of the decathlon under the lights of Roy P. Drachman Track & Field Stadium. McMorris earned a silver medal and set a personal best with a total of 7259 points.
That mark of 7259 points currently ranks 23rd in the country. The top 24 student-athletes on the descending order list will qualify directly for the NCAA Championship. McMorris will have to wait out other conference championships from around the country and declarations to see if he will qualify for the NCAA Championship.
McMorris started the second day with 3946 points, just four points off of his career high for the first day of the decathlon. Day two started well for McMorris as he took first place in the 110m hurdles. The freshman ran 14.61 to take the field by .33 seconds and add 897 points to his total.
The Santa Ana, California native hit personal bests in his next two events. McMorris threw 39.05m/128-1 in the discus to best his career high mark of 122-5. After fouling his first attempt, McMorris posted a solid mark of 121-8 on his second attempt, but came through on his third attempt to accumulate 645 points.
With the pole vault up next in the decathlon, McMorris cleared 4.10/13-9.25. His previous career best of 12-11.50 was easily outpaced as he cleared two different bars on his first attempt that were better than his previous best mark.
McMorris threw 41.55m/136-4 in the javelin as he finished in eighth place to set up the final event, the 1500m. It was another strong event as he ran 4:43.02 to set another personal best. He tallied 661 points in the event.
Overall, McMorris set six personal bests and won two events. On the first day he recorded career best marks in the shot put, high jump and the 400m. He added to those marks on the second day by setting personal best marks in the discus, pole vault and the 1500m, claiming a new personal best for the decathlon.
Tyler Brendel started the decathlon yesterday, but the reoccurrence of an injury that has plagued the redshirt junior throughout the year forced him to withdraw from the competition after one attempt in the long jump.
Cal will head to the rest of the Pac-12 Championship in second place on the men's side after McMorris racked up eight points for the team. The Championship will run May 11-12 at Roy P Drachman Stadium and will be broadcast on Pac-12 Network.
