BERKELEY - All-Pac-12 First Team,  FIVB World Championship qualifier, No. 1 pair starter -  Mima Mirkovic was hardly short on accomplishments for her spectacular season.

But she can add one more that may trump them all: AVCA All-American.

Mirkovic earned All-American honorable mention this season for her efforts from the No. 1 position, where she started all but one dual and went a 17-9. The sophomore defeated the No. 1 pair in eight matches against ranked opponents, including victories over No. 6 Hawaii and No. 9 Long Beach State's top teams.

A leader on and off the court, it is no surprise that Cal's best two seasons in program history have come since Mirkovic joined the team.

"Mima is our first athlete to ever receive All-American honors and she deserves it," Cal head coach Meagan Owusu said. "She continues to develop both as a player and as a leader for this program. I think this award is a testament to how far she's come as a player."

Earlier this month, Mirkovic claimed All-Pac-12 honors, along with teammates Jordan Polo and Caroline Schafer. Even before that, Mirkovic was one of Cal's most decorated beach volleyball players, being named to the All-Pac-12 First Team and All-Freshman Team last year.

Cal has had All-Pac-12 honorees before, but not until now had a Cal beach volleyball player player received All-American honors from the AVCA. It marks another first in what has become an historically successful season for the Bears.

Mirkovic's achievements are even more impressive when one considers that she is Cal's only two-way volleyball player. Along with her duties on the beach team, Mirkovic is a starting outside hitter on the indoor team.

Still an underclassman, Mirkovic strongest seasons are likely still ahead of her, a fact that thrills Owusu.

"She's only a sophomore so I am excited to see how she progresses throughout the year within our program," Owusu said. "But more than anything I am proud of her and it shows how hard she has worked to come this far."
