COLUMBUS, Ohio – Collin Morikawa earned a spot in the 2019 U.S. Open in his pro debut Monday during sectional qualifying and will join former Cal men's golfer Byeong Hun An in the field June 13-16 at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

"I'm very excited to get back to Pebble Beach for the U.S. Open," Morikawa said. "To finally be a professional and have this as my first major will be eye-opening. I can't wait to get this journey started especially at Pebble Beach."

"I'm excited for Collin and Ben to tee it up at Pebble Beach for the U.S. Open," Cal's Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf Walter Chun added. "They continue to make us all so proud of their accomplishments."

Morikawa (71-66 – 137, -5) rolled off five birdies during a nine-hole stretch at Scioto Country Club during his four-under par second round of the 36-hole sectional qualifier to move into a qualifying position and then held on with six straight pars down the stretch to claim one of the 14 U.S. Open spots available in the 121-player field in Columbus. Morikawa started his second round with a bogey on the par-four first hole before birdies on the par-three fourth, par-five sixth, par-four seventh and 10th, and par-five 12th. Morikawa finished in a tie for seventh.

In his opening 18 holes at Brookside Golf & Country Club, Morikawa had shot a one-under with 14 pars, an eagle on the par-five fourth, a birdie on the par-four 13th and bogeys on the par-four seventh and par-three 14th.

"Today was a struggle on the greens until about midway through my second round, but I just kept giving myself chances and the putts finally started dropping," Morikawa said.

Morikawa was the only one of the seven affiliates from the Cal men's golf program participating in U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying in the United States, Canada and England on Monday to qualify for the U.S. Open.

Current PGA TOUR professionals Max Homa (70-72 – 142, E) and Michael Kim (72-WD – WD) were both at the same sectional qualifier as Morikawa. Homa missed the cut by five strokes while Kim withdrew after the opening round.

Former Cal teammates and current professionals Brandon Hagy and Joël Stalter were attempting to qualify in sectional qualifiers in Canada and England, respectively. Hagy, who has a PGA TOUR card, withdrew with a three-over par total after 27 holes at RattleSnake Point Golf Club in Milton, Ontario. Stalter (71-71 – 142, -2), who sees most of his action on the European Challenge Tour, was five strokes shy of a playoff for the final qualifying spot at Walton Health Golf Club.

Current Cal players Jamie Cheatham (72-73 – 145, +2) and Kaiwen Liu (73-72 – 145, +2) both missed the cut playing as amateurs in Newport Beach at the Big Canyon Country Club and Newport Beach Country Club.
