Kareem South Joins Bears As Graduate Transfer

6-2 Guard Led Texas A&M-Corpus Christi In Scoring Last Season

BERKELEY - Kareem South, who led Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in scoring, 3-pointers made and steals this past season, has signed a financial aid agreement to join the Cal men's basketball program as a graduate transfer for the 2019-20 campaign, head coach Mark Fox announced Tuesday.

"Kareem is an excellent shooter and scorer," Fox said. "His consistency from the 3-point line and his overall experience will greatly impact our team."

A 6-2 guard originally from Toronto, Canada, South earned third-team All-Southland Conference honors last season after averaging 13.8 points per game and 5.1 rebounds per game while also sinking 51 3-pointers and registering 40 steals. He had his first career double-double when he set career highs with 29 points and 12 rebounds against Stephen F. Austin in February, a game that also saw him surpass 1,000 career points.

South played in five games during his true freshman season before redshirting with an injury. He returned in 2016-17 to make 29 starts and average 9.0 ppg, helping the Islanders to a 24-12 overall record and to the championship game of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament.

As a sophomore in 2017-18, South contributed 11.4 ppg and 4.3 rpg with 16 double-figure games, including four games with at least 20 points.

A biomedical science major, South is a two-time Southland Conference All-Academic selection. He was also named a D1-AAA ADA Scholar-Athlete for the 2017-18 season.

South becomes the fifth newcomer to the Cal roster for the 2019-20 season, joining guard Dimitrios Klonaras and forward Kuany Kuany, who signed earlier this spring, and guard Joel Brown and forward D.J. Thorpe, who signed their National Letters of Intent in November.
