Crandall-Howell Enshrined In BYU Athletic Hall of Fame

Women’s Gymnastics Co-Head Coach Led The Cougars To Three NCAA Championships

PROVO, Utah – More than two decades after completing her collegiate career, California women's gymnastics co-head coach Liz Crandall-Howell's standout accomplishments as a BYU gymnast were recognized with her induction into the BYU Athletic Hall of Fame.

Crandall-Howell is being honored in Provo, Utah this weekend with Friday's Hall of Fame banquet and a special on-field ceremony during Saturday's football game against USC.

"I am incredibly honored and -- above all -- humbled to be recognized with this induction.  Brigham Young University is known throughout the world as a place that inspires excellence," Crandall-Howell said. "It was during my time at BYU that my passion for coaching was realized.  I also learned how incredibly rewarding college athletics can be."

A full athletic scholarship student-athlete at BYU, Crandall-Howell led the Cougars to three NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships appearances between 1993-96, and claimed two first team All-America honors on the uneven bars. In three of her four years in Provo, she claimed the NCAA Regional uneven bars title.

As a freshman, Crandall-Howell matched a school-record on bars with a 9.95 and was named an  All-WAC balance beam selection. She qualified for the NCAA Championships as a n individual, where she finished 14th all-around.

The following three seasons, Crandall-Howell led her squad to the national championship event. In 1994, she posted the team's season-best on beam with a 9.925 en route to a third-place all-around finish at the NCAA Midwest Regionals, scoring a 38.4 – the highest all-around total ever recorded by a BYU gymnast at that time.

In her senior season, she set a school-record 9.95 on beam and recorded a career-high 9.90 on the floor exercise twice.

"Working and achieving with others who are all striving for a common goal is so much more meaningful than anything I had achieved as an individual.  I was able to renew my love for my sport through my experience," Crandall-Howell added. "It is that love for achieving as a team and continually pushing each other to greater achievement that drives me in coaching today.  I'm so grateful for my coaches and teammates that provided an environment where I could learn and grow."

Crandall-Howell graduated from BYU in 1997 with a degree in physical education and health promotion.

She returns as co-head coach for the Golden Bears this year – her eighth season helping to steer the women's gymnastics program.
