Rosenqvist Leads Strong First Day At Cal Fall Invite

BERKELEY – California's top-seeded Julia Rosenqvist won in straight sets in singles and paired with Jasie Dunk to advance in doubles on a rain-shortened and chilly first day of the Cal Fall Invitational Friday at the Hellman Tennis Complex and the Channing Tennis Courts.

After a first-round bye, Rosenqvist, ranked 24th, beat Pacific's Elsie Frigout, 7-5, 6-1, in the round of 16 in top-flight singles at Hellman. Seeded third in top-flight doubles, Dunk and Rosenqvist knocked off San Francisco's Mya Bui and Chiho Mushika, 8-5, in the opening round of 16.

Early morning rain delayed the start of Friday's matches and delayed some of the day's later singles matches. Cal junior Anna Bright – the Blue second-seed who like Rosenqvist had a first-round bye in singles – saw her second-round match moved to Saturday.

Other Golden Bears did get to play in Blue singles, with all three freshmen capturing their first singles victories as collegians. Erin Richardson posted a 6-3, 6-3 result over San Diego's Kati Kukaras, Haley Giavara followed with a 6-2, 7-6(6) win over Sara Tsukamoto of UC Davis, and Valentina Ivanov prevailed in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, over USD's Daniela Morales.

In Gold-flight singles, Cal senior Katerina Stloukalova – the top seed – topped Sacramento State's Ege Tomey, 6-4, 6-2, in the opening round of 32.

Giavara and Ivanov recorded their first overall collegiate win in Blue-flight doubles on Friday morning, as the newcomers topped UC Santa Barbara's Juliana Valero and Tiffany Lagarde, 8-4.

The three-day Cal Fall Invitational continues on Saturday.
