PORTLAND, Ore. – This one will be different for Cal head coach Nancy McDaniel.

The Golden Bears women's golf team will co-host the Molly Collegiate Invitational on Monday-Tuesday at Waverley Country Club in Portland, Ore., with 11 teams descending on the Pacific-Northwest for the 54-hole tournament.

The tournament will hold special meaning for McDaniel, who grew up in Portland and called Waverley her home course.

"Waverley is a really special place for me," McDaniel said. "There is a lot of meaning for me there."

Familiarity isn't the only reason the event is extra significant for McDaniel. The tournament is named after legendary amateur golfer Molly Murphy Crowley, who was well-known in Oregon golfing circles and won six Oregon state amateur championships. Crowley's daughter, Gigi Cronin, was a fellow junior golfer of McDaniel's and a good friend, and is sponsoring the event.

Lara Tennant, the two-time defending champion of the U.S. Women's Senior Amateur who also won the British Senior Amateur earlier this month, also helped establish the tournament.

"Lara is instrumental in bringing this tournament to Waverley," McDaniel said. "She wanted to see this event at her home course."

The Molly Collegiate Invitational will be the first collegiate tournament ever played at Waverley. It has previously hosted an array of other major events, including seven USGA Championships.

This week's tournament will be the Bears second competition of the 2019-20 season – they opened play earlier this month with an eighth-place finish at the Cougar Cup in Pullman, Wash. Maria Herraez Galvez got her senior season off to a strong start with an eighth-place finish, carding a 4-under par 212.

Monday's shotgun start commences at 8:30 a.m. PT. The field features four ranked teams – including co-host Oregon State – as well as two others receiving votes in the latest WGCA Top 25.
