Teri McKeever Agrees To Contract Extension

Hall Of Fame Coach To Continue Leading Women’s Swimming & Diving Program

BERKELEY – Teri McKeever, Cal's longtime women's swimming & diving coach who has guided the Golden Bears to four NCAA Championships and 11 consecutive top-3 national finishes during her tenure, has agreed to a contract extension through the 2023-24 season.

"Teri McKeever is an iconic coach with an international reputation that is second to none," Director of Athletics Jim Knowlton said. "As much as she develops student-athletes to reach their potential in the pool, Teri also cares deeply about them as individuals and works just as hard to ensure they graduate from Cal prepared to be leaders in their post-collegiate careers. We look forward to having Teri lead our program for years to come."

McKeever, in her 28th season in Berkeley, is coming off a 2018-19 campaign in which she was named both the CSCAA National Coach of the Year and Pac-12 Coach of the Year for directing Cal to a runner-up performance at the NCAA meet. The Bears earned three relay national titles in 2019, and Abbey Weitzeil set an American record in the 50-yard free on her way to being named the Pac-12 Swimmer of the Year.

"I'd like to thank Jim Knowlton and our administration for their enduring support of women's swimming & diving," McKeever said. "I am proud of what we have accomplished as a program and am looking forward to continuing our level of success. While we have been able to accomplish a lot during my time at Cal, there is much more that lies ahead, and I am excited for our future."

Over the course of her career with the Golden Bears, McKeever has led Cal to four NCAA (2009, 2011, 2012 and 2015) and four Pac-12 team championships (2009, 2012, 2014, 2015), and she earned induction into the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame in the fall of 2018. Cal's run of 11 consecutive top-3 finishes at the NCAA meet is the longest current streak in the country.

The Bears have also excelled in the classroom under McKeever's tutelage. Cal has been named a Scholar All-American team by the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association 19 semesters in a row – every time the award has been available – and the team has posted a 100 percent Graduation Success Rate each of the past four years. In addition, the Bears have earned the Newmark Award for having the highest GPA among all 30 Cal teams three of the last four years.

McKeever has been a fixture on national team staffs, as well, including multiple assignments at the Olympics, World Championships and Pan Pacific Championships, and in 2012, she served as head coach of the U.S. Olympic team in London. McKeever is a two-time head coach for the United States at the Pan Pacs meet, and she has been an assistant coach at the World Championships seven times, including this past summer in Gwangju, South Korea.

An eight-time Pac-12 Coach of the Year, McKeever's swimmers have been named Pac-12 Swimmer of the Year nine times and National Swimmer of the Year on eight occasions. A total of 64 of her swimmers and divers have been chosen national scholar-athletes, with 133 on Pac-12 All-Academic teams. McKeever's list of accomplishments also includes coaching 26 Olympians who have won 36 medals, while Golden Bears have captured NCAA individual or relay titles an impressive 65 times.

Currently ranked as the No. 1 team in the nation, Cal returns to action later this month when the Bears host Arizona and Arizona State on Jan. 24-25 at Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley.
