BERKELEY – The No. 6 Cal women's water polo team held a two-goal lead midway through the fourth quarter but couldn't hold on in a 9-8 loss to No. 18 San Jose State on Sunday in the final game of the Cal Cup.

Juniors Claire Sonne and Brigit Mulder and sophomore Grace Raisin each scored twice for the Bears (5-3), who led 8-6 with 4:26 to play.

Freshman goalie Isabel Williams made her collegiate debut and made five saves for Cal.

The Bears played their third straight game without reigning MPSF Newcomer of the Week Sophie Leggett. Fellow freshman starter Cecily Turner was also unavailable.

Cal is back in action next weekend at the Stanford Invitational, where it will face No. 12 UC Davis, No. 7 Michigan and No. 2 Stanford.
