BERKELEY – In its 2020 debut, the Cal women's tennis team has been dominant through the first two days of its Cal Winter Invitational, with the Golden Bears vying with players from Saint Mary's and Cal Poly for singles and doubles titles. The Bears have captured 18 of 21 matches on Tuesday and Wednesday in the annual event at the Hellman Tennis Complex and the Channing Tennis Courts.
 
The Bears have won five of six doubles matches. Leading the way was Cal's 13th-ranked doubles team of Anna Bright and Haley Giavara, with the Cal duo defeating Danielle McIntyre and Gabriela Tevez of Saint Mary's, 8-3, and topping Cal Poly's Emily Monaghan and Emily Ackerman, 8-4.
 
Cal also collected wins from its ranked players in singles. Last year's Cal Winter Invitational singles champion – the Bears' 45th-ranked Julia Rosenqvist – bested the Gaels' Jordan Harris, 6-1, 6-1, and McIntyre, 6-2, 6-3; No. 21 Haley Giavara beating McIntyre, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, and Cal Poly's Monaghan, 6-0, 6-1; and No. 100 Anna Bright knocking off the Gaels' Tevez, 6-2, 7-6(3), and Liesl Pieters, 6-2, 6-4. The Bears have won 13 of 15 singles matches with one day remaining.

"I was just happy to see us get out there on the courts," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "First I want to acknowledge our amazing grounds crew for getting the courts ready to play, despite some rainy and cold weather here in January. They do a great job so we can get out on the courts and get much-needed singles and doubles play after a long winter break.
 
"I was pleased with where we're at right now. We're taking a look at some different options for singles and doubles, and that's one of the good things about this tournament – everyone on the entire team gets a lot of matches. As we look ahead to the upcoming dual-match season, it's nice to get some match play at home before we do a lot of travel in the first segment of the season."
 
The final day of the Cal Winter Invitational starts at 10 a.m. on Thursday at Hellman.
