BERKELEY – California's
Julia Rosenqvist repeated as the singles champion and teammates
Anna Bright and
Haley Giavara won the doubles title as the Cal Winter Invitational – a tune-up for the dual-match season to come – ended on Thursday at the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts.
Â
The Golden Bears won their titles by virtue of going unbeaten at No. 1 singles (Rosenqvist had a 3-0 record) and No. 1 doubles (Bright and Giavara were 3-0), respectively, through the three-day event that included players from Saint Mary's and Cal Poly.
Â
"It was a good weekend overall and was especially good for the coaching staff to see where everyone is at because we haven't really seen them for about a month," Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus said. "It gives us a starting place for what we need to work on individually and as a team in the next couple weeks before the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. We did a pretty good job in singles and doubles."
Â
On Thursday, the 13th-ranked pair of Giavara and Bright defeated Jordan Harris and Chloe Goyette, 8-1, at Hellman to wrap up the doubles title. The Cal duo of senior
Alexis Nelson and freshman
Erin Richardson also claimed a doubles win with an 8-6 result over Lene Mari Hovda and Gabriela Tevez of Saint Mary's. Bright has captured the Cal Winter Invitational doubles title in three straight seasons with different partners, including
Jasie Dunk in 2019 and
Julia Rosenqvist in 2018.
Â
"It's always interesting putting doubles teams together because you don't quite know how they're going to pan out in match play even after you put them together in practice," Augustus continued. "We were glad to see Anna and Haley do well. They're becoming more and more comfortable with each other and becoming more aggressive in each match they play."
Â
Later in singles, Rosenqvist, ranked 45th, defeated Cal Poly's Susanne Boyden, 6-1, 6-1, at Hellman to secure her second consecutive title at the Cal Winter Invite. The 21st-ranked Giavara posted a 6-4, 6-1 victory over the Gaels' Harris on court two at Hellman.
Â
"Julia, as an upperclassmen now, is doing a great job of setting the tone in singles," Augustus added. "She didn't lose a set all tournament, and it shows she worked hard over the break. She's also working really hard on her transition game, and it's nice to see her continue to implement that in her match play. That's only going to make her tougher to beat as the season goes on."
Â
Overall, Cal won 27 out of 34 matches this week in their annual tournament.
Â
The Bears return to action when they compete in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Jan. 24-25 at Kansas.
