Tries From 15 Golden Bears Propel Cal Over SDSU

SAN DIEGO – California rugby improved to 5-0 on Saturday, defeating San Diego State to conclude their third consecutive week on the road.

"We're a team which wants to improve," said head coach Jack Clark. "There is real purpose in our desire to improve. I'm not sure we're among the very top teams, but we are getting better."

15 different Bears scored in Saturday's match, including nine in the first half. Sophomore flanker Jason Severance did well in his second start of the season, contributing three tries in his 80 minutes of play. Three other players from the Cal side scored multiple tries including junior Adam Roeske, senior Keanu Andrade, and sophomore Max Murphy.

"We made it one of our main focuses to get off the bus ready to play," said sophomore wing Nick Bloom of the Bears' relentless effort throughout the match. Senior lock (and captain in the second half after Thomas Spradling was substituted off at halftime) George Salter echoed Bloom's sentiments of Cal's effort on Saturday: "In the first half, our forwards and front row including Jack Manzo and Damon Wiley played well," said Salter. "Good communication from our backs helped us get through the second half as well."

Cal will now return to Berkeley for their first home games of the spring. The Bears will celebrate Parents' Weekend with a doubleheader, including a 12:30 p.m. kickoff against UCLA and a 2:00 p.m. match against California Maritime Academy. The match against the Bruins will be broadcast on Pac-12 Networks.

"It will be great to play at home next week," said Bloom. "With less games at home this year, we have to cherish each one that we have."
