Late Flurry Foils Bears

Matt Bradley Scores 20 Second-Half Points In Loss To ASU

BERKELEY – California got 20 second-half points from sophomore Matt Bradley, including four 3-pointers, but a late Arizona State surge led the Sun Devils past the Golden Bears, 80-75, Sunday afternoon at Haas Pavilion.

Bradley finished with a game-high tying 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the floor. Junior forward Grant Anticevich recorded his 10th game of the season with double figure scoring, tallying 18 points to go along with eight rebounds.

Senior Paris Austin added 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field and added five rebounds with five assists, while sophomore Andre Kelly scored eight points and grabbed nine rebounds.

The Bears out-rebounded the Sun Devils 34-31, including 9-6 on the offensive end.

California falls to 10-15 overall and 4-8 in conference action, while Arizona State improves to 17-8 on the season and 8-4 in Pac-12 play.

The Sun Devils were led by 22 points each from guards Remy Martin and Alonzo Verge Jr.

How It Happened: The Sun Devils used a 6-0 run spanning just a minute of game time, including a 3-pointer from Remy Martin to take a 66-58 lead with 4:20 left in the game to force a Cal timeout.

Bradley knocked down his third 3-pointer of the second half to pull Cal within one at 50-49 with 10:22 remaining in the game.

ASU scored 14 of the first 21 points in the second half to take a 46-38 advantage with 13:36 left in the game, the last three coming on a three-point play from Verge Jr.

Cal used a stretch of 6-of-7 field goals to take its second lead of the game at 31-30, but an ASU layup gave the Sun Devils a 32-31 lead as the two teams went to the locker room at the half. Anticevich led all scorers with 14 points at the break.

Anticevich followed with a 3-pointer and a jumper to tie the game at 24 at the last media timeout of the half with 3:46 remaining.

The Bears suffered through a drought of more than five minutes from the field, allowing Arizona State to grab a seven-point lead before an Anticevich jumper made it 24-19 with 6:33 left in the first.

Both teams started shooting well from the field, with California at 67 percent and ASU at 50 percent at the second media timeout. The Sun Devils led 17-15 with 11:15 in the half.
