NEWPORT BEACH – Junior Brigit Mulder scored three goals and senior Kristina Garcia made four steals, but the No. 7 Cal women's water polo team fell 11-10 in overtime to No. 10 Michigan on Friday in the first round of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational.

The Bears will play No. 21 Pacific in the consolation bracket at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Senior Hannah DeRose and freshman Ruby Swadling each added two goals for Cal (8-5), which held leads late in regulation and the first overtime period but couldn't close it out.

Swadling, the reigning MPSF Newcomer of the Week, scored her second goal with 1:24 remaining in regulation and followed that up with a steal on the Wolverines' next possession. But Michigan registered an equalizer with three seconds to play to force the extra sessions.

Each team scored twice in the first overtime period, but the Bears failed to score after that. The Wolverines netted the final goal with 1:49 to play.

Friday marked the third meeting between Cal and Michigan this season, and each game has been decided by two goals or less.  The Bears beat the Wolverines 8-7 on a goal by Claire Sonne with one second left at the Gaucho Invite on Jan. 19, then defeated them again 10-8 earlier this month at the Stanford Invitational.
