MALIBU, Calif. – Eighteenth-ranked Cal women's tennis had hoped to close out its road trip with a win on Saturday at No. 12 Pepperdine. But instead the host Waves triumphed, 5-0, over the Golden Bears at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
 
Pepperdine clinched the victory when the 45th-ranked Anastasia Iamachkine beat Cal's 28th-ranked Valentina Ivanov, 6-3, 6-2, at court-three singles to take a 4-0 lead. With the Waves later leading 5-0, the teams tried to play out the final two singles matches. But the contest was cancelled due to rain and lightning in the area.
 
Cal's record – including Friday's setback at No. 2 UCLA – fell to 1-3.  Pepperdine's record improved to 5-3 after the nonconference match.
 
"Today tried to go out there and build off of yesterday's match," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "There were definitely some positives. Pepperdine came out with some different doubles teams, and we were in good position. I thought we played well on court one both days in doubles. In singles, Pepperdine was a little more seasoned as a team, having played more dual matches than we have at this point.
 
"We have some things to work on when we get home. To be able to compete in back-to-back days is important. We'll use what we saw today to frame our focus in practice. And it's good that we'll play both of these teams later in the spring."
 
Cal makes its 2020 dual-match home debut on Feb. 29, when the Bears host San Diego State at 12 p.m. at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
