No. 7 Bears Win Twice At Barbara Kalbus Invitational

NEWPORT BEACH – Senior Hannah DeRose and junior Brigit Mulder tallied five goals each as the No. 7 Cal women's water polo team notched a pair of wins Saturday at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational at Corona del Mar High School.

The Bears (10-5) advanced to Sunday's Ninth Place Game against No. 8 UC San Diego after registering a 15-4 win over No. 21 Pacific and a 12-6 triumph against No. 16 Loyola Marymount.

Cal pulled away in the second half against the Tigers, scoring the game's final eight goals while holding UOP scoreless for all but 1 minute, 26 seconds after halftime. Junior goalie Cassidy Ball had a career-high 13 saves despite sitting out the second half of the fourth quarter.

Nine different players scored for the Bears, including three each from DeRose and Mulder. Junior Georgia Gilmore and freshman Helena Batey each added two goals while Batey, senior Jackie Sanders and freshman Ruby Swadling pitched in with two assists. Mulder had two steals.

Cal got off to a quick start against the Lions, getting early goals from Mulder, DeRose and freshman Shea Salvino to take a 3-0 lead early in the second quarter. The Bears extended their advantage to 8-2 midway through the third quarter and LMU never got any closer.          

Salvino finished with a career-high three goals while Batey had two more assists and Swadling registered three steals. Ball and freshman Isabel Williams combined for 11 saves.

The Bears' game against the Tritons begins at 1 p.m. Cal and UC San Diego have met once previously this season, with the Tritons prevailing 14-13 in overtime at the Gaucho Invite.
